Lime Sulphur - Bonsai Jin Whitener & Deadwood Preserver
Used for generations as a fungicide, sterilising winter wash and for pest control. Lime sulphur is a traditional product with a multitude of uses all of which it is very effective at achieving.
Today lime sulphur is primarily used in bonsai as a deadwood treatment. It creates a nice pale cream to white sun bleached effect on all dry oxidised wood. The colour is sometimes a little bright when first applied but this quickly fades back to a very natural silver grey when exposed to the elements. A great product you should not be without.
Lime Sulphur can be used in the UK and EU as a fungicide, insecticide and miticide. This includes organic crops. As covered in EU Regulations (EC) No 889/2008.
In the UK we recommend winter washing of bonsai trees be carried out around mid-winter, typically end of January or the first half of February when frost or rain is NOT expected.
When using as a winter wash dilute with clean water ONLY at a rate of 20ml per litre for dormant deciduous trees. For evergreen varieties use a solution of 15ml per litre of clean water ONLY. Spray thoroughly, outdoors, to dampen the entire tree from above and beneath the branches to ensure a thorough even damping. Overspray onto the soil is harmless but try to prevent excess contact. POTS MAY BECOME DISCOLOURED DUE TO THE ALKALINE PROPERTIES OF LIME SULPHUR, ALWAYS TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO AVOID CONTACT. After application place the tree outside to naturally air dry. Protect from rain/frost for 24 hours until fully dry. After application trees may be slightly discoloured. This will quickly disappear.
For the control of various fungal and pest infestations at any time of year dilute lime sulphur at a rate of 7.5 to 10ml per litre of clean water ONLY. Spray in the early morning or evening from above and beneath foliage and allow to dry naturally. Any discolouration caused will quickly fade.
Lime sulphur is particularly effective for the eradication of scale insect infestations of bonsai trees. Dilute as above and spray directly into the insects. Repeat at 2 week intervals if necessary.
Lime sulphur quickly breaks down into non-hazardous forms within a day of application.
Lime sulphur is a strong alkaline solution with a strong smell of sulphur (rotten egg). Any odours will quickly fade within a few hours of application.
